Cognitive engagement

There is a vast corpus of research in cognitive and educational psychology on how to foster cognitive engagement in online courses. Part of increasing cognitive engagement is knowing what improves attention and memory and what degrades them. Because this article is about online course facilitation and delivery, we won’t discuss how to build online teaching materials. If you will be presenting information or generating learning materials (such as films, websites, presentations, reading materials, or even course announcements), an overview of the most powerful ideas and tactics may be quite useful.

Attention is a crucial cognitive function. Students will struggle to retain material if their attention is not captured. A human can only concentrate on a tiny quantity of information at a time (Cowan, 2010). There are various ways that online course facilitators may use to reduce distractions and promote the sort of concentration that is most conducive to learning.

Principles for enhancing cognitive engagement

There are a few established factors that influence student attendance and learning, which govern course facilitators’ tactics to promote cognitive engagement.

• Direct attention to key facts for efficiency and selection.

• Reduce needless distractions or information processing to avoid wasting limited cognitive resources.

• Consider ideal learning circumstances like Flow. Being in Flow (or “the zone”) is considered ideal for learning (Csikszentmihalyi, 2014). Flow states are characterized by a loss of sense of time and immersion in the job. In Flow, keeping attentional concentration is easy, even while doing demanding activities (such as playing an instrument or participating in a sport) (Csikszentmihalyi & Nakamura, 2010). Flow is connected with good effect (Ullén, de Manzano, Theorell, & Harmat, 2010). So it’s a great place to study.

Emotional engagement

Emotional involvement measures how involved and motivated a student is to pay attention and put forth an effort. It is the driving force behind learning and progress.

Interest and curiosity are two cognitive emotions that define emotional involvement. Positive and negative emotional states influence attention and information processing. For example, according to cognitive researcher Barbara Fredrickson, good emotions might increase attentional ability (Fredrickson, 2001). Positive emotional states promote receptivity to new ideas, unique connections, creativity, cognitive flexibility, inquisitive thinking, and creative problem-solving.

• restricting or concentrating attention;

• leading to selective and detail-oriented processing;

• staying with a notion more exploitatively; and

• employing analytic problem-solving (Fredrickson, 2001; Fredrickson & Branigan, 2005).

Possibilities for emotional involvement

Several emotions, both good and negative, may influence cognitive engagement and learning. Listed below are positive emotions that might enhance attention and learning. Negative emotions that may assist concentrate attention are also discussed.

Emotion goes a long way.

Negative emotions may lead to frustration, anger, melancholy, helplessness, or tension, which can impede learning and memory (Vogel & Schwabe, 2016). Because positive emotion orients us towards novelty, too much pleasant feeling may be bad, limiting creativity and leading to distraction (Davis, 2008). In this case, a little emotion may go a long way. It’s not as hard as you believe to get pupils into emotional states that promote engagement and learning.

Animals and trees used to communicate with one another at the beginning of time. At the time, only fireflies had a fire. Fox was cunning, and he intended to acquire fire for the globe. He needed to discover a method to take some from the fireflies.

Fox once begged the geese to teach him their call. They said that he must first learn to fly with them before they will teach him. The geese bound the fox's wings. 'Do not open our eyes while you fly,' they cautioned him.

Fox glided alongside the geese; his eyes closed. They glided above the firefly community as the day faded tonight. Fox blinked his eyes wide. His wings immediately ceased functioning. He collapsed inside the walls of the fireflies' settlement. Two helpful fireflies arrived to assist the fox. They showed him a cedar tree when he inquired how he could climb over the wall. They told him that if he begged the tree, it would bend down. This sparked an idea in Fox.

When the fox requested the fireflies to dance that evening, they gathered wood and built a large fire. Fox attached a piece of cedar bark to his tail in secret. Then he constructed a drum and banged it while the fireflies danced about him.

After a while, the fox seemed to be exhausted and gave the firefly his drum to beat. When they were not looking, the fox whacked his tail in the fire, igniting the bark. Then he dashed to the cedar tree and said, 'bend down for me!'

The cedar tree sagged, and the fox got on top. When the tree re-emerged, it lifted him over the wall. Fox ran and ran, and the fireflies followed him. The fox's tail set fire to the shrubs and trees along the route everywhere he went.

When the fox located the hawk, he gave the bird the burning bark. A hawk soared high over the ground, scattering fire sparks everywhere. This is how the fire spread over the planet.

When the fireflies seized the fox, they told him, 'Because you took our fire, your penalty is that you will never be able to utilize it for yourself.'

To this day, no fox cooks with fire.

The daddy frog ate as much air as he could to grow in size and brag about his efforts. “Probably an ox wasn't as big,” he grumbled. Bowwow! Bang! His gut exploded before he could finish. This storey does not have a lot of stuff on YouTube for kids, but it is still a highly enjoyable little hilarious narrative for kids that anyone of any age may enjoy.

Birbal and the farmer

A farmer was looking for a water source for his land, he purchased a well from a neighbour. The neighbour, on the other hand, was astute. The next day, when the farmer came to get water from his well, his neighbour refused to let him.

When the farmer inquired as to the reason, the neighbour said, "I sold you the well, not the water," and walked away. Disgusted, the farmer petitioned the emperor for justice. He described what had occurred.

Birbal, one of the emperor's nine wisest courtiers, was summoned. Birbal then questioned the neighbour, saying, "Why don't you let the farmer d

raw water from the well?" You did sell the well to the farmer, didn't you?”

“Birbal, I did sell the well to the farmer, but not the water within it,” the neighbour said. He has no legal authority to collect water from the well.”

“Look, since you sold the well, you have no right to keep the water in the farmer's well,” Birbal remarked. Either you pay the farmer's rent or you take it out right away.” When he realised his plan had failed, the neighbour apologised and went home.

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch

Molly the milkmaid had filled her pails with milk one day. Her job was to milk the cows and then sell the milk at the market. Molly enjoyed deliberating over how to spend her money.

She thought about all the items she wanted to buy as she filled the milk pails and went to the market. As she strolled down the street, she considered purchasing a cake and a basket full of fresh strawberries.

She noticed a chicken a bit further down the road. “With the money I acquire from today, I'm going to buy my own chicken,” she reasoned. When that chicken lays eggs, I'll be able to sell milk and eggs and make extra money!”

“With more money, I'll be able to buy a gorgeous dress and make all the other milkmaids jealous,” she continued. Molly began skipping out of excitement, completely forgetting about the milk in her pails. The milk soon began to pour over the rims, covering Molly.

Molly, drenched, exclaimed, "Oh no! I'll never be able to afford a chicken again.” She returned home with two empty pails.

“Oh, my God! “How did you end up?” Molly's mother inquired.

“I was too busy daydreaming about all the items I wanted to buy to see the pails,” she explained.

“Oh, Molly, my darling. “How many times do I have to tell you, ‘Don't count your chickens till they hatch?'”

A man slaughtered a hefty cow and remarked to his daughter as he started the grill. “Daughter, invite our family, friends, and neighbours to join us for dinner... let us feast!" Those who came ate and drank until late. The father, speechless, looked to his daughter and said. “I hardly knew the individuals that arrived, and some of them I'd never seen before, so where are our family, friends, and neighbours?"

“All those who came out of their homes did so to assist us in extinguishing a fire in our home, not to attend the party.

These are the ones who are deserving of our kindness and compassion."
